Ever since learning about Kiva in 2017, I knew I wanted to participate. I loved the idea of helping to provide zero-interest loans to people who were trying to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
After a few years of using Kiva, I wanted to double down on my efforts and maximize my impact. I became more selective in what loans I would fund with the limited money I had. I started to align my lending with the principles outlined in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which theorizes that the path to self-actualization as a human being requires satisfying layers of psychological and physiological needs - with basic needs like water, food, shelter, and good health being the foundation of all human needs.
With that framework for directing my lending on Kiva, I decided that I could maximize my impact even further by creating a Kiva Team, sharing my efforts with the world, and hopefully inspiring more people to help provide funding for Water and Sanitation investments on Kiva. That is why I created WorldWaterAccess.org and started World Water Access Fund as a Kiva Team in 2021.
I hope you will join me in supporting global access to critical water resources and services by joining the Kiva Team. One of my goals for the future is to formally establish World Water Access Fund as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and begin accepting tax-deductible donations, allowing others to generously add to the total funds being administered directly by WWAF through Kiva.
For now, we will continue to make an impact solely by providing zero-interest loans on Kiva in the Water and Sanitation category. In the future, however, I hope to provide grants and various kinds of assistance to organizations who are on the ground directly making an impact in the communities with the most need.
At the moment, no. But when the time is right, World Water Access Fund will file as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in order to accept tax-deductible donations and further incentivize contributions to the fund.
You can get involved in our efforts right now when you join our team on Kiva, allowing you to hand-pick the loans that you want to fund in the Water and Sanitation space.
The main reason that we choose to make loans instead of donations in the Water and Sanitation space is that it allows us to multiply our impact. With a relatively small pool of initial capital, say $1,000 it is possible to finance $10,000 of development of Water and Sanitation infrastructure in less than 10 years, and to make a direct impact with individuals who are most in need.
Many of the recipients of our funding are simply unable to make the up-front payments required to install a new toilet in their house, or to dig a well to get clean water at their house to have ownership and control over their source of clean water. Through Kiva we are able to give them access to those resources and finance the purchase over a period of months at zero interest. In some cases the instalation of new Water and Sanitation infrastructure allows recipients to directly earn or save more money.
In other words, these investments pay for themselves. The only thing needed to make these developments happen is the up-front capital. That's where we, and hopefully you, come in to help.
